Spiders
What Are Spiders?
Contrary to what many people believe, spiders are not insects. They are actually arachnids, belonging to the same class as scorpions, ticks, and mites. All spiders have eight legs, whereas insects have only six. The spiders we most commonly encounter here in New York are the jumping spider, wolf spider, American house spider, orb web spider, cellar spider, and occasionally the brown recluse and black widow.

Things You Should Know:
- Spiders are arachnids, not insects.
- When outside temperatures drop, spiders seek out warm shelter.
- Spiders enjoy areas with low lighting such as attics, basements, and garages.
- The venom of both the brown recluse and the black widow is harmful to humans.
Why Are They In My House?
Most spiders that travel indoors do so because of weather conditions. When it begins to get cold in the fall and winter, spiders begin looking for a warmer place to hide. They are often found in dark corners of basements, attics, crawlspaces and garages.
Are Spiders Dangerous?
Spiders will bite if they feel threatened; however, spiders commonly found in New York are generally not dangerous to humans. The exceptions are the brown recluse spider and the black widow spider. The brown recluse can cause severe necrosis of the skin around the bite and the black widow’s venom can be fatal in small children or elderly people. If you are bitten by one of these spiders, seek immediate medical attention.
What Does It Take To Get Rid Of Spiders?
Spiders are difficult to eliminate once they have taken up residence in an establishment. They are very quick and elusive pests and can be very hard to track down and kill. In most cases, a professional New York exterminator is needed. Call Parkway Pest Services today to find out more about our pest control services for spiders and how we can help with your spider control problem.
How Can I Prevent A Future Infestation?
Checking the outside of your home or business and sealing any entry points can help; however, due to their small size spiders can be very difficult to keep out. A protection plan from Parkway Pest Services provides constant relief from spiders and most other common New York pests. Call or contact us online for more information.
