Carpenter Bees
What Are Carpenter Bees?
Carpenter bees are a type of bee that makes their nests in wood. They are about an inch long and look very similar to bumble bees; however, the carpenter bee's abdomen is black and shiny. Carpenter bees do not eat wood, but they do bore holes into the wood, nest there, and lay their eggs. Unlike other local bee species, carpenter bees do not live in colonies.

Things You Should Know:
- Carpenter bees are wood-damaging pests.
- These bees do not build hives or nests but rather make their nests in wood.
- Unlike other bees, carpenter bees do not live in colonies.
- Although female carpenter bees have stingers, they are not very aggressive and rarely sting.
Why Do I Have Carpenter Bees Around My House?
Carpenter bees make their nests in wood. If you have carpenter bees making holes in the wood around your home, it is most likely either a female making a nest to lay her eggs in or a bee preparing to go into a nest to overwinter.
Are Carpenter Bees Dangerous?
The male carpenter bee can become aggressive when threatened; however, it does not have a stinger. It will hover in front of a person and buzz around their head, but this is merely for show. The female does have a stinger, but it is much less aggressive than the male and rarely stings. However, as with all other stinging insects, the sting can cause severe allergic reactions in some people.
What Does It Take To Get Rid Of Carpenter Bees?
Dealing with any stinging insect can be potentially dangerous due to the possibility of allergic reactions to stings. Carpenter bees should only be handled by professionals. Homeowners should contact Parkway Pest Services for stinging insect control services at the first sign of trouble with carpenter bees.
How Can I Prevent A Future Infestation?
Carpenter bees rarely bore into painted or stained wood. Finishing your porch, deck, shed, or other wooden structure with either a fresh coat of paint or stain will deter carpenter bees from choosing these areas for their nests. However, beyond this, there is no way to keep them off of your property. Many in the New York metropolitan area choose a Protection Plan from Parkway for constant protection from all sorts of pests. I would certainly use them in the future if need be.
"I contacted Parkway Pest Control as I thought I heard squirrels in my attic/crawlspace. They were very professional; they confirmed that, luckily, I did not have squirrels in the attic, and most likely what I heard was them running on top of the roof. It was a relief. They also gave me some pointers for the future, if I should ever suspect that I do have squirrels in that area — what to do to determine, if they actually are there before contacting them. Their pricing was competitive. I would certainly use them in the future if need be."- Debra C. -
