Carpenter Ants
What Is A Carpenter Ant?
Carpenter ants are one of the largest species of ants found in America. The worker ants can be anywhere from 1/8 to 1/2 an inch long. There are several different species of carpenter ants. They can be all red, all black, or a combination of both. These ants have two large mandibles that they use to chew the wood they make their nests in.

Things You Should Know:
- Carpenter ants chew through wood using their two large mandibles.
- Carpenter ants are often mistaken for destructive termites.
- These large ants tunnel through wood in order to make nests; they do not consume wood.
Why Are They In My House?
Like most other ant species in New York, carpenter ants most likely found their way into your home while foraging for food. However, you may have a satellite colony that has decided to nest in your home. Carpenter ants will make their nests out of anything made of wood. Structures with water damage or high moisture content are much more susceptible to carpenter ants.
Are Carpenter Ants Dangerous?
Carpenter ants can bite; however, they rarely do so, and their bite does not cause any harm to humans. The real danger with carpenter ants is the structural damage they can cause while tunneling in their nests.
What Does It Take To Get Rid Of Carpenter Ants?
Getting rid of carpenter ants is not an easy task. They often have large, complex nests in multiple locations. To eliminate them, the source must be located, and the entire colony eradicated. Missing one of the satellite colonies can result in an infestation again down the road. That is why it is best to have a trained professional inspect and treat the problem. "I contacted Parkway Pest Control as I thought I heard squirrels in my attic/crawlspace. They were very professional; they confirmed that, luckily, I did not have squirrels in the attic, and most likely what I heard was them running on top of the roof. It was a relief. They also gave me some pointers for the future, if I should ever suspect that I do have squirrels in that area — what to do to determine, if they actually are there before contacting them. Their pricing was competitive. I would certainly use them in the future if need be."- Debra C.
