Pests Can't Wait For Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving
|

When you think of Thanksgiving, does your mouth water? Do you think of succulent turkey, puffy stuffing, and a pile of mashed potatoes covered in gravy? Do you look forward to a slice of pie or chocolate cookies straight from the oven? Every home has a different assortment of tasty treats, and usually one that stands out from the rest. For some, the standard turkey fixings are replaced with Grandma's world class lasagna. For others, it is date nut bread or banana bread cooked to moist perfection. Are you hungry now? I bet you can't wait for Thanksgiving. Well, neither can those pests.

If you think you like tasty morsels, you've got nothing on bugs and wildlife. In any given day you will think about a lot of things: television shows you like, places you like to visit, things you like to do, people you like to hang out with--the list is endless, really. But, all those pests think about is where they are going to live and what they are going to eat. That means those tasty morsels make up 50% of all that bugs and wildlife think about. The best you can boast is probably 15%, unless you cook food for a living.

What does this mean for you? If you don't want pests in your pantry this Thanksgiving, you need to start realizing how much those creatures love food, and make sure they can't gain access to it. Here are some tips to help.

  • Consider putting all the food that comes in cardboard or paper inside hard, plastic containers that seal. This does two things. It prevents pests from chewing their way into your foods, and it seals the smells in.
  • Make sure your floors are clean. You may not think much about a little sprinkle of sugar that fell on the floor, but those bugs sure do. The grains are much larger to an ant or a fly.
  • Make sure your counters are clean. Toast crumbs under the toaster are a treasure trove to pests, and they will love nothing more than to consume the sticky organic residue left on your counter when you're done baking some Thanksgiving pie.
  • Bugs love a stack of dishes next to the sink. Those plates, bowls, and utensils are like a buffet. Consider filling your sink with soapy water and leaving dishes in the sink. This will also make them easier to clean when it is time to roll up your sleeves and get at them.
  • Pests aren't as picky as we are. If you don't have a trash can in your kitchen that seals, you're inviting all kinds of pests to come in and dine.

When you hide food sources and keep things clean, household pests will be less motivated to stay in your home around Thanksgiving, or any time of the year. And, that is a good thing.
