It only takes a few warmer days in the spring to trigger the emergence of swarming pests like termites.
Signs of swarmers inside your home will be discarded wings or small winged insects coming out from within your walls. Swarmers have straight antennae, broad waists, and four equally sized wings. If you are experiencing a swarm of termites inside your home in the late winter or early spring, this may be a sign that you have a far bigger problem than you realize.
Large numbers of the “swarmers” which are the winged termites will flee their colonies during rainfall and warmer weather to fly into the air dispersing themselves to new areas. Eventually, they drop to the ground, shed their wings, find a mate, and begin building new colonies. From their colonies, they will seek out materials to eat; and sometimes those things are inside your home. Contrary to popular belief, they don’t just eat wood; they can devour books, insulation, and even swimming pool liners and filtration systems. However, they can eat enormous amounts of wood. They can also do a lot of damage outside by harming trees and shrubs. Termites cause billions of dollars in damage every year in replacements, repairs, and rebuilding. Some people call them the “hidden enemy” because they work in the dark while they eat inside wooden structures, and because you may never see them or know they are there until you notice the damage that they have caused.
Outdoors, you will commonly find termites under tree stumps and in woodpiles; but, if you see winged termites emerging from the foundation of your home, you should be very concerned. That will mean your home is already infested, and you will most certainly need a professional pest control service to come to take care of them. Mud tubes on your home, as well as hollowed out wooden structures, are sure signs your home is infested. You may also notice sagging walls, floors, or ceilings which can be signs of a termite infestation as well. You will want to be proactive and not let it reach this stage. It is much better to have year-round protection because you’ll never have to worry or wonder again about an infestation of termites in or around your home.
