It’s fall here in Westchester, New York, and the temperature is dropping. Much like the coming cold, rodents are looking for any way to steal our warmth. And where does that warmth usually reside? In our homes. We all know how to combat the cold here in New York, and surprisingly enough combating rodents is not much different. Here are some ways mice, rats, and squirrels might try to steal your warmth this fall.
Entry Points
Much like cold air, rodents will find any crack or crevice they can sneak through. Although air does not have a minimum size needed to squeeze into your home, the smallest rodent does. A mouse needs a hole or cracks at least the size of a dime to squeeze their way in. That’s right. A dime! It can be a challenge, but if you are up for the task, finding these entry points and sealing them with a caulking gun is a great way to begin keeping these unwanted intruders out. In addition to these entry points, mice, rats, and squirrels will look for rips and tears in your window and door screens to get in. Consider having these patched or replaced. For rodents such as squirrels, you might have to look a little higher for ways they might get in. These adept climbers will often scurry their way across tree branches and onto your roof. From there, chimneys and openings found around roof soffits are great ways for them to gain access. Trim branches that are touching your home, cap your chimney, replace missing shingles, and block off any openings to your attic or roof line if you want to keep these creatures out.
Potential Threats
Once inside, these pests can cause some serious issues for you, your family, and the structure of your home. Rodents have been known to be transporters of fleas, lice, mites, and ticks. These rodents and their piggybacking bugs come with a variety of different diseases, including Lyme disease and rabies. Along with diseases, mice, rats, and squirrels have been known to chew on exposed wires inside wall voids. If there is an object between rodent and where they want to go, and they can chew through it, they will. Here is a not-so-fun fact: Rats teeth are so sharp, they can chew through several different metals, including lead.
